Dear President Donald Trump,
Gold Butte is Nevada’s piece of the Grand Canyon. It is a treasure trove of cultural, historic, and natural wonders covering approximately 300,000 acres between the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument and Lake Mead National Recreation Area. In December 2016, it was designated a national monument using the Antiquities Act.
Gold Butte is beloved by Nevadans and visitors from throughout the country and across the world who come to hike, camp, hunt, ride ATVs on designated routes, climb, explore cultural and historical sites, and otherwise enjoy the great outdoors. I am grateful that these incredible experiences will forever be available to me and to future generations of Americans. Protection of Gold Butte will also enhance the region’s status as an important destination for tourism, while safeguarding important resources against ongoing damage from unregulated activities.
Preservation for Gold Butte was widely supported by local Nevada residents, Tribes, youth groups, business owners, community and tourism leaders, as well as citizens throughout the country who understood the urgent need to protect this magnificent place. But without the Antiquities Act, swift action to safeguard Gold Butte from ongoing damage would not have been possible. I urge you to do all you can to protect and preserve the conservation legacy of 16 presidents – both Republican and Democrat – and the economic benefits that protected public lands bring to our state by defending the Antiquities Act from any and all future attacks.
