Save Our Monuments
On April 26th, President Trump signed an executive order attempting to eliminate or shrink parks and monuments that have been protected by our presidents in recent decades, including Gold Butte and Basin and Range National Monuments in Nevada as well as 25 other national monument designations spanning coral reefs to giant sequoias. This is an attack on parks and our shared American history and heritage.
On August 24, after a review period of 120 days, the Department of Interior sent their review to the White House. It was not shared with the public. Secretary Zinke announced that he suggested changes to some national monuments. The American people deserve to know the fate of their national monuments.
The lack of details in this “report” continues to leave Gold Butte in limbo. Attempts to shrink boundaries or make adjustments to management that would negatively impact natural treasures and archeological sites continue to be a very real possibility.
The White House claims to be releasing the full report in the next few weeks, and until then let’s continue calling on President Trump and his administration to protect our special landscapes.
